Creativity & innovation workshop, GLC

Today was the last day of the GLC conference. The theme was “Innovation and Creativity”. I am a big believer in Innovation in all aspects of life!  We also discussed some of  Edward De Bono’s work. Edward De Bono was the first person to coin the expression “lateral thinking” and a pioneer in that field. – The theme was hosted by Nigel Smith, an extremely energetic and dynamic individual who runs his own management training consultancy.

Here are some interesting remarks/ quotes from that session.

Innovation starts with the ability to think differently!

Errors of judgement are often errors of perception.

Instead of asking why it won’t work, how about asking why it will work.

We also discussed a few simple but effective tools or models that can enhance creativity or innovation.

PMI (Plus, Minus, Interesting) – What this is simply about is that when generating ideas on a particular issue you can do this through a brainstorm. You start by listing all the Plus ideas, then Minus then Interesting. Similar in some ways to a SWOT analysis (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats)

CAF (Consider All Factors) – Before making a decision or judgement, simply consider all factors.

  1. I heard a quote this week I thought you’d enjoy, based on your failure comment a few days ago, and this entry on innovation.

“Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment.”
